Project Overview

The Digital Media Project for Public Awareness was implemented by Saifrood Unity and Aid Organization during 2014 and 2015 with financial support from USAID.

The project used the Jame Ghor website and its associated social-media platforms to share public-interest information with audiences across Afghanistan and among Afghan communities abroad. Through articles, public-awareness content, reports and social-media communication, the initiative addressed important issues related to health, education, women’s rights and wider social development.

The project reportedly reached more than two million users and readers, demonstrating the potential of digital media to connect communities, increase access to information and encourage constructive public dialogue.

At a time when many Afghan communities had limited access to reliable and locally relevant information, Jame Ghor provided an accessible online platform through which people could learn, exchange views and engage with issues affecting their families and communities.

Background and Context

Access to reliable information is essential for social development, public participation and informed decision-making.

During the project period, Afghanistan faced significant challenges related to:

  • Limited public access to reliable information
  • Low awareness of health and educational issues
  • Social barriers affecting women and girls
  • Geographic isolation of rural communities
  • Limited opportunities for open community dialogue
  • Weak connection between citizens, civil society and public institutions
  • Rapid growth in internet and social-media use without sufficient public-interest content

Digital platforms offered an opportunity to make information available beyond traditional geographic and institutional barriers.

Through Jame Ghor and social media, the project made public-awareness materials accessible to people who might otherwise have had limited opportunities to participate in discussions about health, education, rights and social development.

The Jame Ghor Digital Platform

The main platform for the project was www.jameghor.com, supported by its connected social-media channels.

Jame Ghor served as an online public-information and community platform where audiences could access content concerning Afghanistan’s social, cultural and development challenges.

The platform enabled SUAO to:

  • Publish public-awareness articles
  • Share educational information
  • Highlight community concerns
  • Promote discussion about health and education
  • Increase awareness of women’s rights
  • Share perspectives from different parts of Afghanistan
  • Connect Afghan communities inside and outside the country
  • Encourage public participation and constructive dialogue
  • Disseminate information rapidly through social media

The combination of a dedicated website and social-media platforms increased the reach of the content and allowed readers to engage with and share information across wider networks.

Public Health Awareness

Health-related public awareness formed an important part of the project.

Digital content helped audiences access understandable information about health, prevention, family well-being and community responsibility.

The project contributed to greater awareness of matters such as:

  • Basic health and hygiene
  • Prevention of common illnesses
  • Maternal and child health
  • The importance of seeking timely medical care
  • Healthy household practices
  • Community responsibility for public well-being

Publishing this information online allowed it to remain available beyond the date of initial publication and enabled users to share it with relatives, friends and wider social networks.

Promoting Education

The project used digital media to highlight the importance of education for individuals, families and communities.

Content promoted education as an important foundation for:

  • Personal development
  • Employment opportunities
  • Community participation
  • Improved health awareness
  • Social progress
  • Greater opportunities for children and young people
  • Long-term national development

The platform also provided space for discussion of barriers affecting access to education, particularly in underserved and geographically isolated communities.

By making educational issues visible online, the project encouraged families and community members to recognise the wider social value of learning.

Women’s Rights and Participation

Women’s rights and social participation were also central themes of the public-awareness initiative.

Through Jame Ghor and its social-media platforms, the project published and shared content concerning:

  • Women’s right to education
  • Women’s access to healthcare
  • Women’s dignity and social inclusion
  • Participation of women in community development
  • Challenges affecting women and girls
  • The importance of women’s contributions to family and society

Digital communication created opportunities to present these issues to a broad audience and encourage discussion among families, community members and civil-society actors.

The project sought to increase understanding through informative and culturally relevant communication rather than confrontational messaging.

Key Project Activities

The project’s main activities included:

  • Producing public-awareness content for Jame Ghor
  • Publishing articles and informational materials online
  • Sharing public-interest information through social-media platforms
  • Promoting awareness of health, education and women’s rights
  • Increasing public engagement with social-development issues
  • Providing an online platform for community perspectives
  • Connecting Afghan communities through digital communication
  • Encouraging readers to discuss and share awareness materials
  • Expanding the digital reach of locally produced public-information content

Detailed records of the number of articles, social-media posts and individual campaigns can be added if these materials remain available in SUAO’s or Jame Ghor’s archives.

Target Audience

The project addressed a broad digital audience, including:

  • Afghan families
  • Women and girls
  • Young people and students
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Teachers and education professionals
  • Community representatives
  • Civil-society organisations
  • Health and development practitioners
  • Afghans living outside the country
  • Readers interested in the social and cultural development of Afghanistan

The online model made it possible to reach audiences both within Afghanistan and internationally.

Community Engagement Through Digital Media

The project did more than publish information. It provided a platform through which users could engage with public issues and share content with others.

Website and social-media communication supported:

  • Wider circulation of public-awareness messages
  • Community discussion of important social concerns
  • Exchange of perspectives among readers
  • Greater visibility for issues affecting underserved communities
  • Connections between Afghans inside the country and the diaspora
  • Public participation in conversations about social change

Social-media sharing allowed awareness materials to move beyond the original website audience and reach additional users through personal and community networks.

Main Results

The project reported the following principal results:

  • Public-awareness content reached more than 2,000,000 website visitors and social-media users.
  • Health, education and women’s-rights issues gained greater online visibility.
  • Jame Ghor developed as a significant digital platform for information and community engagement.
  • Afghan audiences gained greater access to locally relevant public-interest content.
  • Social-media platforms expanded the circulation of awareness messages.
  • The project strengthened connections between communities inside Afghanistan and the Afghan diaspora.
  • Online content encouraged public discussion of important social and development concerns.
  • SUAO strengthened its capacity in digital communication, content production, public awareness and online engagement.

The two-million figure should be presented as the project’s reported or estimated digital reach unless verified website analytics and social-media records are available.

Public-Awareness Impact

The project demonstrated that digital media can be an important instrument for social awareness and community participation.

By publishing information through Jame Ghor and sharing it through social media, the initiative helped bring important issues into public discussion.

Its impact included:

  • Greater access to public-interest information
  • Increased visibility of health and education concerns
  • Wider discussion of women’s rights and participation
  • Stronger connections between communities and civil society
  • Greater circulation of locally produced Afghan content
  • Increased awareness of issues affecting vulnerable communities
  • Stronger organisational experience in digital advocacy and communication

Digital awareness alone cannot solve complex social challenges. However, it can help people gain knowledge, question harmful practices and participate more actively in discussions about their communities.

Role of Saifrood Unity and Aid Organization

SUAO implemented the project and was responsible for using digital media to advance its public-awareness and social-development objectives.

The organisation’s role included:

  • Identifying relevant public-awareness themes
  • Producing and publishing digital content
  • Managing online communication
  • Sharing content through social-media platforms
  • Encouraging public participation and dialogue
  • Promoting awareness of community concerns
  • Documenting and communicating social-development issues

The project strengthened SUAO’s institutional experience in:

  • Website-based public communication
  • Social-media outreach
  • Digital content production
  • Public-awareness campaigning
  • Online advocacy
  • Audience engagement
  • Communication with the Afghan diaspora

Partnership with USAID

USAID’s financial support enabled SUAO to expand the reach and quality of its digital public-awareness activities.

The partnership combined:

  • International development support
  • SUAO’s knowledge of Afghan communities
  • The digital reach of Jame Ghor
  • Social-media communication
  • Locally produced public-interest content

This approach made it possible to reach a much larger audience than would have been possible through physical community meetings alone.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

The project’s digital nature created opportunities to monitor reach and audience engagement through:

  • Website visitor statistics
  • Page views
  • Social-media reach
  • Content sharing
  • Reader comments
  • Audience messages
  • Engagement with individual publications
  • Feedback received through digital channels

The available project summary confirms a reported reach exceeding two million users, but it does not provide detailed analytics.

Where historical records remain available, SUAO should preserve:

  • Website analytics
  • Social-media statistics
  • Published articles
  • Screenshots and archived web pages
  • Donor reports
  • Audience feedback
  • Campaign materials
  • Project agreements and financial documentation

These records would provide valuable evidence of the project’s results and SUAO’s organisational history.

Sustainability and Long-Term Value

The project concluded in 2015, but much of its digital content may remain available through the Jame Ghor archive.

Unlike temporary awareness activities, online articles and resources can continue to be:

  • Read
  • Shared
  • Referenced
  • Used for education
  • Preserved as historical documentation
  • Accessed by future generations

The project also generated lasting organisational capacity within SUAO in digital communication, online public engagement and social-media outreach.

Jame Ghor continues to provide a platform through which information, analysis, cultural content and community perspectives can be made publicly accessible.

Contribution to Sustainable Development

Although the project preceded the formal implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, its objectives align with several Sustainable Development Goals.

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being

The project increased access to public-health information.

SDG 4 – Quality Education

It promoted education and expanded access to digital learning and awareness content.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

The initiative increased public awareness of women’s rights, dignity and participation.

SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities

Digital communication helped connect audiences across geographic and social boundaries.

SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Access to information and public dialogue contributes to more inclusive and informed societies.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

The project reflected cooperation between USAID, SUAO and digital communities in Afghanistan.

These should be described as areas of alignment rather than original project indicators.

Key Lessons Learned

Digital platforms can achieve broad reach

A website supported by social media can reach users across Afghanistan and among diaspora communities.

Local content strengthens relevance

Public-awareness materials are more meaningful when they reflect local realities, languages and community concerns.

Social media expands website impact

Social platforms enable articles and awareness messages to circulate beyond their original audience.

Digital archives create long-term value

Online content can remain accessible long after the funded project has ended.

Audience data should be preserved

Website and social-media analytics are essential for verifying reach and demonstrating impact.

Public awareness requires consistent engagement

Long-term change is more likely when information is published regularly and audiences are encouraged to participate in continuing discussion.

Conclusion

The Digital Media Project for Public Awareness, implemented by Saifrood Unity and Aid Organization with financial support from USAID during 2014–2015, used www.jameghor.com and associated social-media platforms to promote awareness of health, education, women’s rights and wider social-development concerns.

The project reportedly reached more than two million users and readers, making it one of SUAO’s most significant early digital-awareness initiatives.

By combining locally produced content, website publication and social-media outreach, the project expanded access to information, supported community dialogue and strengthened connections among Afghan communities within the country and abroad.

The project remains an important part of SUAO’s institutional history and demonstrates the organisation’s longstanding commitment to communication, public awareness and positive social change.
